Carine’s Why

For more than two decades, my work has centred around bringing people together through communications, events, education, wellness and transformational spaces.

Beneath all of those different roles has always been the same deeper question:

How do we create environments where people can feel more connected, more alive and more fully themselves?

Sanctuary of Light grew from that question, but it also grew very directly from my own life. As a mother, I have spent years thinking about the kind of world my children are growing into and the kind of environment I want to help create for them.

I have watched how easily children can become overwhelmed by environments that are too rigid, overstimulating or disconnected from the way they naturally learn. I have experienced the exhaustion that so many parents carry, and I have seen what happens when people lose connection with their bodies, with community, with purpose and with the natural world.

I have also lived through seasons in my own life where I found myself questioning everything I had once accepted as normal. The pace, the pressure, the fragmentation, and the expectation that we should somehow raise children, build careers, heal ourselves, maintain relationships, care for our health and create meaningful lives while doing almost all of it in isolation began to feel increasingly unsustainable.

At some point, I stopped asking how we could make this way of living easier and started asking a much bigger question: what if we created another way entirely?

I began imagining a place where the things we so often separate could belong together again. A place where children could learn through nature, curiosity, creativity and real life.

A place where food could grow from the land around us, where wellness was not something we escaped to for a weekend but something woven into daily life, and where people gathered around tables and fires instead of simply passing one another in the rush of everyday life.

I imagined families feeling more supported, children growing up with a stronger sense of belonging, and elders, teachers, growers, healers, creators and entrepreneurs all contributing to the same living ecosystem.

I imagined a place where we could reconnect with Mother Earth, with our bodies, with one another and with something greater than ourselves.

That vision slowly became Sanctuary of Light.

Warren and I are building that vision together, bringing different strengths, perspectives and life experience into one shared project.

Together, we imagine a way of living where people know one another, where children belong to a village, where food, land, healing, learning and community are interconnected, and where people have space to breathe and feel more human again.

Sanctuary of Light is our attempt to bring that vision into form, one piece of land, one family, one gathering, one garden, one partnership and one courageous step at a time.

For me, the deeper why is simple. I want my children to grow up knowing that when the world around us does not reflect the values we believe in, we are not powerless.

We can build what we wish existed.
